The Internal Administrative Affairs Directorate performs duties in the following areas:

  • enforces laws, other regulations and general acts in the area of internal administrative affairs and migration
  • implements policies in the area of internal administrative affairs and undertakes initiatives and puts forward proposals for formulating and implementing migration policies in the Republic of Slovenia
  • monitors the situation in the area of internal administrative affairs and migration, identifying relevant trends and new occurrences and taking appropriate measures
  • prepares draft laws and secondary legislation as well as delivers opinions on draft laws during interdepartmental harmonisation procedure
  • coordinates international and European cooperation in the areas of internal administrative affairs and migration
  • cooperates with foreign diplomatic and consular representative offices, national and international institutions
  • coordinates the work of the working group for ensuring uniform and organised cooperation in the area of migration and for preparing measures for the implementation of the principles and aims of migration policy, appointed pursuant to the Aliens Act and the Resolution on the Migration Policy of the Republic of Slovenia
  • participates in the work of EU and Council of Europe expert bodies
  • cooperates with international organisations operating in the area of migration and asylum (IOM, ICMPD, SE, UNHCR, etc.)
  • coordinates and guides the work of organisational units responsible for internal administrative affairs within administrative units
  • develops administrative information technology
  • operates and develops registers of Slovenia and an information society and executes the tasks defined by the E–Administration strategy and action plan
  • provides organisational, personnel, financial, administrative and technical support for the operation of the Directorate

  • offers support in administration of internal administrative affairs records
  • is tasked with development and smooth operation of the internal administrative affairs system and coordination of the work of project groups  
  • offers advice on the application of modern technologies and their implementation of legal acts
  • offers advice on the preparation of treaties and inter-state agreements with regard to information technology
  • participates in E-Administration projects
  • coordinates the work related to the management of internal administrative affairs records
  • manages access to internal administrative affairs records, monitors access to journals and keeps records thereof in line with the security and data protection policies

Citizenship Section

  • guides activities in the area of the management of the Register of Births, Marriages and Deaths, the Permanent Population Register, Passport Register, Identity Card Register, Citizenship Register and other relevant registers
  • prepares draft laws, secondary legislation and other regulations in the relevant areas of work and delivers opinions on draft laws during the interdepartmental harmonisation procedures
  • follows the development of travel documents and offers assistance to other organisational units of the Directorate in the development of documents
  • takes decisions at second instance in the administrative procedure regarding personal names, birth, marriage and death matters, residence registration, identity cards, travel and laisser-passez documents
  • takes decisions at first and second instances in the administrative procedure regarding matters related to granting and termination of citizenship, runs review procedures at second instance with regard to citizenship
  • participates in the preparation of and delivers opinions on draft  treaties and inter-state agreements as well as identity cards and passports
  • guides and provides expert assistance to administrative units and performs expert supervision over the activities of administrative units within the relevant area of work
  • coordinates the development of information society related to citizen registration matters

  • monitors the situation in the area of the adoption of regulations within the EU in the relevant area of work
  • participates in the preparation of and delivers opinions on draft international treaties and inter-state agreements
  • guides and provides expert assistance to administrative units and performs expert supervision over the activities of administrative units in the relevant area of work

  • participates in the preparation of and delivers opinions on draft international treaties and inter-state agreements
  • implements the policies and the legislation adopted by the Republic of Slovenia in the area of migration and refugee and alien integration
  • participates in the work of EU working bodies in the area of migration and refugee and alien integration
  • coordinates measures in the relevant field
  • collects and analyses data related to migration and refugee and alien integration
  • guides and provides expert assistance to administrative units and performs expert supervision over the activities of administrative units in the relevant area of work

  • participates in the preparation and implementation of the asylum policy adopted by the Republic of Slovenia
  • participates in the work of the working bodies of the EU and Council of Europe in the area of asylum
  • cooperates with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and international organisations operating in the area of asylum and human rights (IOM, ICMPD, etc.)
  • coordinates the work of non-governmental organisations in the area of asylum and cooperates with them in the preparation of projects
  • prepares or participates in the preparation of asylum-related projects related to obtaining European funds
  • proposes and implements organisational, personnel, financial and administrative technical tasks necessary for smooth operation of the Division
