The Police and Security Directorate has the following responsibilities:
- guiding and supervising the police
- preparing draft mandatory policies prescribed by the minister, and preparing development, organisation, personnel and other basic policing guidelines in accordance with the existing rules,
- preparing systemic solutions in various fields of policing
- preparing drafts of regulations and of other instruments and planning measures related to development, organisation, personnel and other basic policing guidelines, and preparing drafts of regulations on detective and private security activities and ski safety, which are proposed by the Ministry of the Interior
- receiving, handling and solving complaints filed against police officers’ work and the Police
- systemic and normative activities in drafting laws, implementing regulations and other police-related regulations
- conducting security vetting and issuing security clearances for access to classified information
- preparing systemic solutions and contingency plans for the operation of the Ministry, the Police and the Internal Affairs Inspectorate of the Republic of Slovenia in a crisis situation, state of emergency and war, and in the field of civil protection, rescue and assistance
- performing administrative tasks in the field of detective and private security activities and ski safety
- keeping the register of private security licence holders, the register of personnel employed by private security companies and the register of ski patrollers in ski areas
- cooperating with the Private Security Chamber and the Chamber of Detectives of the Republic of Slovenia on the development of detective and private security activities
Police Guidance Section

- taking part in drafting security policy and a strategy for its implementation
- studying and analysing reports and data on police performance and giving its opinion to the minister
- proposing the basic guidelines for the medium-term police development and work plan
- proposing guidelines and mandatory instructions for the preparation of the annual policing plan
- preparing the requirements of the police to devise special programmes and plans
- preparing positions and policies for performing particular policing tasks specifically asked for by the Director General of the Police
- taking part in the planning of regular, extraordinary and repeated supervision of the work of the Police
- other tasks laid down by the Police Act and other laws and implementing regulations as well as tasks determined by the Minister
Police Supervision Section

- studies reports and data on police performance, analyses them and plans supervision
- plans, organises and carries out regular, extraordinary and repeated supervision of the work of the police and prepares guidelines for the rectification of deficiencies found during supervision
- supervises the exercising of police powers, especially from the point of view of the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms
- supervises the processing of complaints against the police and police officers and the tasks of internal affairs
- supervises the gathering, protection and security of data in policing
- carries out other tasks laid down by the Police Act and other laws and implementing regulations as well as tasks determined by the Minister
Complaints Section

- receives and processes complaints lodged by individuals who feel their rights and freedoms were violated by a police officer's action or omission
- supervises the processing of complaints under competence of the Police
- proposes to the Minister appropriate measures in the field of complaints
- proposes to the Minister the measures of appointing representatives of external public who take part in the processing of complaints against police officers
- coordinates its work with the Police in the field of complaints
- deals with complaints and other letters criticising the police sent to the Minister by citizens and organisations
- carries out other tasks laid down by the Police Act and other laws and implementing regulations as well as tasks determined by the Minister
Classified Information Section

- issues authorisations to access classified information to employees of the Ministry of the Interior, other state bodies and organisations to which information is transmitted so that they can meet orders of the Ministry of the Interior, except to employees of the Police, Ministry of the Defence and the Slovenian Intelligence and Security Agency
- issues security clearance to organisations to which the Ministry of the Interior, as the contracting authority (in cases of delivery, execution or service), transmits classified information regarding the meeting of an order
- informs the Office of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for the Protection of Classified Information on the issued authorisations
- carries out internal supervision of the implementation of the Classified Information Act and regulations deriving from it
- keeps the classified information register of the Ministry of the Interior
- keeps the sub-register of classified information of the EU and NATO
- carries out other professional tasks regarding the designation and protection of classified information
Defence and Security Planning Section

Defence and Security Planning:
- implementation of national policy of the Republic of Slovenia in the field of defence and security preparations to ensure the highest possible level of national security, exercising the role and tasks of the Ministry as a player in the system of national security of the Republic of Slovenia, integration in the common European security and defence policy and other forms of international cooperation (area of freedom, peace, respect for human rights and security; execution of certain tasks of the Republic of Slovenia in defence and security structures (organisations/alliances)) and fulfilling obligations deriving from international treaties
- defence and security planning within the Ministry (making contingency plans for a crisis, state of emergency and war; measures for the protection of critical infrastructure; measures for terrorist acts and use of WMD; civilian-military cooperation, taking part in providing support to armed forces (Slovenian army and the allies' forces); setting up appropriate links between the defence plan and plans on other fields and their harmonisation)
- civilian crisis planning (crisis management measures) within the Ministry
- execution of security measures (measures to ensure the security of people, property, buildings, data and materials) and the protection of classified information in the field of planning
- regulation of status issues regarding the performance of certain defence duties within the Ministry (work and material duty)
- provision of material and health care, equipment (interoperability, standards) and planning of measures to ensure the suitability of buildings and equipment for work in a crisis, natural and other disasters and in a state of emergency or war
- training for work in a crisis, state of emergency or war
- drawing-up of guidelines and supervision
- cooperation with state and other bodies and certain companies, institutes and organisations (especially those that are of special importance for the defence of the Republic of Slovenia)
Natural and Other Disaster Protection
In cooperation with the Police, Inspectorate of the Republic of Slovenia for Internal Affairs and other competent players in the field of natural and other disaster protection:
- preparation of documents on the functioning of the protection, rescue and aid system at the Ministry and Police in case of natural and other disasters
- drawing-up and updating of contingency plans for natural and other disasters
- planning of staff training for personal and mutual protection
- taking part in the preparation and adaptation of national plans of protection and rescue and other regulations on protection, rescue and aid
- taking part in the preparation and execution of training as part of the system of natural and other disaster protection
- taking part in training and equipment provision for joint operation with the Police and Slovenian Army in protection and rescue
- taking part in the preparation and execution of protection and rescue exercises of international, national, regional and local character
- cooperation with the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief, Training Centre for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief, Inspectorate of the Republic of Slovenia for Protection Against Natural and Other Disasters, and bodies, units and services of the Civil Protection in the performance of certain tasks
- other tasks in accordance with its competences.
Tasks in the Field of Private Security, Detective Activity and the Issuing of Service Cards for Ski Patrollers

Private Security:
- granting, changing and withdrawal of the licence to perform private security
- granting and withdrawal of service cards under Art. 49 of the Private Security Act
- determining the contents and course of professional training under Art. 29 of the Private Security Act, upon a proposal of the Chamber
- giving consent to foreign legal and natural persons for their carrying out services of private security in Slovenia
- control of the implementation of the Private Security Act provisions and regulations deriving from it
- keeping the register and records under Art. 64 of the Private Security Act
Detective Activity:
- supervision of the pursuit of detective activity in accordance with the law
- giving consent in accordance with the Detective Activity Act
Ski Field Patrol:
- granting authorisation to carry out work and duties of ski patrollers
- issuing service cards to ski patrollers
